In a recent conversation an associate asserted that the biblical system of tithing 10% was "just a way to control the masses." Ironically, this same person has told me on many occasions that the government needs to raise our taxes. The irony never once struck him.
Tithing is a mark of commitment to God, an act of personal sacrifice that one is free to partake in if he so wishes. No one forces you to tithe, so I don't understand how the allegation of "controling the masses" can be fulfilled. The system can, and has been abused by men however. As Cooper Abrams explains:
"You might explain that we do not give to the Lord, ....because everything is already His. He has set a plan that we just return a portion to carry on His work....receiving the blessing of the fruit it produces.
Yes, there are con artists, false preachers and churches...especially on TV who are thieves and use the teaching of the tithe to rob people. But this is not biblical tithing or better "biblical giving" ....as biblical tithing is given through the local church and the congregation controls how it is spent and no individual profits from it. It can be abused.....everything God has given us the devil and those that follow him twist into something wrong....but that does not mean it is not God's plan and also a blessing to true believers to have part in God's work.
I have two messages on my web site that explain biblical giving.... they can be found at
bible-truth.org/Sermons.html#019"
Taxation, on the other hand is a way to control people as it is a primative form of extortion. This is explained well in this article by Tibor R. Machan of the Ludwig von Mises Institute (http://www.mises.org/fullstory.aspx?control=1103).
That just goes to show you, liberals don't want you to have control of your money because it means less for their precious feds.
