The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5: 22 to "Abstain from all appearance of evil." I think Most of what pollutes the entertainment industry be it wanton violence, excessive profanity, pagan spirituality, and crude sexuality. Now I'm no prude (and the Bible is not a prudish book for that matter) who is afraid to talk about these things, but the fact that stuff like that which is so repulsive is taken as mere "entertainment" disgusts me. It can be difficult for Christians to know which entertainment is safe and which isn't safe, so here are some helpful websites that review the moral content of motion pictures. I know it's not very "cool" to be concerned about morality, but the right and wrong are not determined by popular opinion. Besides, what's "cool" and what isn't is relative. What's cool to one person may be lame to another.
1) www.capalert.com/ - Excellent website that not only reviews movies for sex, violence, and profanity, but also spiritually offensive material. They discovered that movie rating standards were slipping too. But alas, as no good deed goes unpunished, they have been subject to ridicule to the Junior High schoolers who go on open forums and make fun of them in order to look cool in front of the other computer dorks. They are very fair and accurate. I was told that they may occasionally get some of their offscreen analysis wrong. Though I doubt this very much considering the source of the accusations, and the fact that they could only name one supposed "error," we'll assume that this is true for arguments sake. Even if they occasionally get a few offscreen details wrong, they are great at documenting the onscreen abominations. There was also someone who said that the reviewers were just looking for an excuse to see movies they shouldn't, but since they don't know the reviewers personally, I think this statement arose out of prejudice and pre-conceived notions. Besides, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. I also enjoy how the take the effort to avoid crude and foul language. The don't take abominations lightly, which is why they're first on the list.
2) www.movieguide.org/ - "Movieguide is a ministry dedicated to redeeming the values of the mass media according to biblical principles, by influencing entertainment industry executives and helping families make wise media choices."
3) www.pluggedinonline.com/index.cfm - Review movies, music, and TV. Unfortunatly they are part of Focus on the Family, so beware of false theology and unbiblical teaching. Stay clear of the CCM they promote.
