I'll will address the general allegation first, then a specific comment I recieved. First, nowhere in the Bible does it say "enjoying things is a sin." If it were, we would be unable to love the LORD with all our heart, soul and mind (Matthew 22:37-39). If having fun is sinful, then why do I have an "Entertainment" category. I enjoy studying the Bible, and that's not a sin. No, the idea that enjoying anthing at all is an offshoot of legalism (http://www.kjv1611.org.uk/Liberty%20to%20Legalism.htm), but real Bible-believing Christians are anything but. The truth is, Christianity promotes a personal responsibility and ethic that runs countrary to the carnal, selfish, cult-of-the-self promoted by liberals and humanists, so they will often resort to slander by making Christianity look restrictive (as shown bellow). This helps scare people away from the Bible, and into the collective conscience.
I was once told by an associate that he was once went to a family event ina theologically conservative region. He said that he could prove that Baptists hate fun because there was "no music, no dancing, no smoking, no food, and no alcohol." Thus he concluded "all true Baptists think that enjoying anything is sinful," (do you'd think he'd get away with saying "all true Muslims hate the west?") Fist of all, going to one gathering and reading some overhyped book does not give you the ability to distinguish a true Baptist from everyone else. Secondly, the purpose of a wedding is to join a man and a woman together in the presence of God, not to give you a good time. Now apparently, he didn`t ask for justification as to why there was none of the above. How do you like that? He comitted the logical fallacy of making a judgement based on his own perceptions. This is a beautifal way to show liberal "tolerance" and "open-mindedness" for what it really is, a condescending smugness that only tolerates that which it is similar to. Everything else is just unenlightened ignorance.
Folks, I come from a Baptist family, a went to a Baptist summer camp. I remember large holiday dinners, walks to the camp candy store, Harmonicas, banjos, guitars, video games, and family.
True joy isn`t giving in to every carnal desire that the world throws at you, but in loving God with all our heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37-39). That is why I`ll take my Baptist responsibility over humanistic selfishness any day.
Oh, and if your curious as to why things were the way they were at the event, here are some helpful links:
Although it is wrong to use instrumental music in Church (http://www.bible.ca/H-music.htm), that is not the only reason there ccould have been no music. Perhaps the choir was busy, or there was no choir. The same goes with food. Perhaps they were unable to get a caterer. Whatever the reason, the fact that the person in question did not bother to inquire about their absense, and thus does not now the reason puts him in no position to criticize.
