Hi Johnny,
It is hard to respond to a person who has made up their mind about God and the Lord Jesus Christ not being real and who is rejecting the truth. We call these people agnostics, because they have a bias against the Lord and truth.
Yes, we do appeal to people's emotions because God made us emotional beings, but we appeal more importantly to a person's heart. We are not trying to "sell" religion and if fact biblical Christianity is not a religion....but truth and God's plan for man.
I generally just ask people who are agnostic a few simple questions. First, Are you going to die? ....of course they will have to answer yes. Next, what will happen to you then?
No matter what they say.....you simple explain that God made us and His written word the Bible explains who we are, where we came from and what lies ahead in the future. God wants us with Him in heaven which is a perfect place and that is why Jesus Christ, who is God, came to earth to suffer and die for the sins of men, that they could go to heaven to be with our Creator when we die. The Bible answers the question about what happens after we die.....it tells us that there is more to life that just the few years we live. There is a future life for those who accept God as their Savior.....an eternal life in heaven.
If given the opportunity I explain that if their is no future life, and no God...our existence makes no sense.....and we have no purpose.
Of course there is a lot more to trying to witness with a person who seems to oppose God's truth...but we pray for them and if they allow us we tell them about the Lord Jesus. If they do not...then we have done what we can....and their fate is in their own hands.
Hope this helps..

Johnny's Commentary: Ivory tower liberals like to accuse Chistians of being irrational by appealing to people's emotions, while at the same time scarring people away from the Bible by making Christianity look restrictive. They also revise history to make Christians look like the bad guys, despite the fact that Christians have written more books, achieved more sciences, freed more slaves, and recorded more languages than anybody else. Secular humanism, meanwhile has killed more in 200 years than Christianity has in 2000 years.
