Genesis 3:14-15 states "And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."
This prophecy does not, as often assumed, refer to a struggle between people and snakes, but rather Jesus (the seed of the woman) defeating the devil on the cross. This is confirmed in several other passages.
Galatians 4:4 "But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,"
Hebrews 2:14-16 "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham."
Romans 16:20 "And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen."
Habakkuk 3:13 "Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, even for salvation with thine anointed; thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the neck. Selah."
Isaiah 53:5 "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."
This cannot refer to literal snakes because many snakes are harmless. The prophecy is clearly about satan, who inhabited the serpents body at that time. God is telling satan that he will crawl on the ground like the snake he possessed and be defeated by Jesus on the cross.

Many Christians have used this passage to justify an irrational fear of snakes, even the non-deadly ones. They are forgetting that God has used snakes for good too. An example of this is in Exodus when God turned Moses' staff into a snake and made it eat the snakes of the Pharoah's magicians to show them that their magic was powerless. Snakes aren't "more evil" than any other of God's creatures, it just had the misfotune of being posessed by Lucifer who inturn tempted Eve who talked Adam into eating the fruit which caused the fall of man.
It is interesting to note that while Christians have no reason to have an irrational fear of snakes if they are not harmful, snakes have become a popular symbol in the occult/pagan community, so that is something to watch out for.
